FUNDAMENTALS OF ADDICTIONS
Purpose:

To provide participants with foundational knowledge necessary for an understanding of the field of addictions, specifically relating to alcohol, other drugs and gambling.
Audience:

This course is appropriate for helping professionals, resource people, students and other individuals interested in the topic area. This course is intended for the general public as well as anyone taking it for credit with various programs. This course is a prerequisite for all ACCP students in the Addictions Specialty at the University of Manitoba.
Description:

This course will include foundational information in the following areas:

Overview of drugs, drug use, and gambling activities in Canadian society:

  • Theories of causation and current models for rehabilitation and prevention.
  • How drugs work in the brain and how gambling affects thought processes.
  • Prevalence of alcohol and other drug use and misuse, gambling and problem gambling activity in Canada.

Overview of the formal addiction rehabilitation system in Canada:

  • Framework to determine Level of Involvement and model of how people change behaviours (Stages of Change).
  • Components for successful rehabilitation planning and continuum of rehabilitation services available in Canada.
  • Ongoing processes for making and maintaining behaviour change.

INTERVENTION STRATEGIES: A MULTI-LEVEL APPROACH
Purpose:

To provide the general knowledge and skills necessary to identify individuals who are having problems with their use of alcohol/other drugs or gambling activities; to explore concerns with them and motivate them to consider making changes; and to make referrals to specialized addictions services.
Audience:

This course is primarily designed to assist those employed in, or preparing for, helping professions allied with the addictions field, such as: health and mental health services, corrections, employee assistance programs, social services, spiritual advisors, clergy, and other helping fields. This course is not intended for the general public.
Description:

This course will provide information about:
  • Levels of Involvement with addictive activities
  • The Harm Reduction Approach

This course will develop skills to:

  • Identify or screen for potential problems
  • Introduce the topic and talk to people about concerns
  • Assist with the referral process

Fundamentals of Addictions (for all participants)

It is expected that participants will come to this course with:

  • Counselling skills such as active listening and helping clients explore and resolve ambivalence

APPLIED SUICIDE INTERVENTION SKILLS TRAINING (ASIST)
Purpose:

ASIST is a two-day, skills building workshop that prepares caregivers of all kinds to provide suicide first aid interventions. As an ASIST-trained first aid intervention caregiver, you will be better able to:

  • Identify people who have thoughts of suicide
  • Understand how our beliefs and attitudes can affect suicide interventions
  • Seek a shared understanding of the reasons for thoughts of suicide and the reasons for living
  • Review current risk and develop a plan to increase safety from suicidal behaviour for an agreed amount of time
  • Follow up on all safety commitments, accessing further help as needed

Audience:

ASIST prepares caregivers of all backgrounds to help persons with thoughts of suicide in ways that increase suicide safety.

Description:

Suicide first-aid training is hands on, practical work including:
  • Small group discussions
  • Skills practice that are based on adult learning principles
  • Experience powerful videos on suicide intervention

Participation in the full two days is required to be certified. Feel challenged and safe in a supportive environment.
