Director, Brandon and Surrounding Area – #2018-020

Full-Time Permanent Position

The Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM) is a Crown Agency that is committed to being a foundation of excellence in providing addictions services and supporting healthy behaviors. AFM employs over 400 staff and provides a wide range of addictions services to Manitobans through 28 locations across the province.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director is responsible for the ongoing leadership, management, and administration of their respective program area while ensuring that a client centered philosophy and approach is maintained, enhanced and integrated into the development, provision and support of AFM’s programs and services. The Director will be a coach in the area of supervision and will be collaborative in developing and maintaining community partnerships. The Director participates on AFM’s Provincial Leadership Team and will work on a variety of strategic initiatives and in the planning and development of policy, procedures and processes.

 The Director will demonstrate competence in the following:

  • Organize: Set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, and track details, data, information and activities
  • Plan: Determine strategies to move the organization forward, set goals, create and implement action plans, and evaluate the process and results
  • Solve Problems: Assess problem situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations and/or resolve the problem
  • Emotional Intelligence: Ability to manage own emotions and strong feelings; maintain a calm and tactful composure under a broad range of challenging circumstances; think clearly and stay focused under pressure

 Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Creating client centered environments where therapeutic, community and professional relationships are based on compassion, respect and dignity
  • Ensures that program standards and requirements are achieved in accordance with AFM standards, goals, policies and priorities
  • Acts as a coach, mentor and resource to staff and referral agencies, and applies continuous improvement processes and principles
  • Ensures that collaborative environments are fostered and developed
  • Works cooperatively with referral and related social services or health care agencies, and other relevant local stakeholder partners to achieve common goals
  • Responsible for the preparation of annual budgets, schedules expenditures and analyzes variances to ensure that unit program area budgets are managed in accordance with AFM budget guidelines
  • Coaches, guides and administers the performance management, recruitment and human resources processes for the facility to ensure the facility is staffed to meet the needs of clients
  • Responsible for client and staff safety by ensuring safety in the areas of the physical/psychological environment, confidentiality, and social issues
  • Work collaboratively in the context of a provincial organization, with numerous colleagues, to ensure a consistent “One AFM” approach.


  • Master’s Degree in a related social service discipline, or the experience equivalent
  • Minimum five to ten (5-10) years of leadership experience in a substance use and/or mental health treatment setting is required (an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered)
  • Experience developing and managing budgets
  • Have strong strategic, analytical and organizational skills
  • Extensive experience in implementing best practices for assessment and treatment of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders
  • Extensive experience in a management role, and a proven ability to deliver and stay current with leading practices for delivering trauma informed, addiction recovery and client centered services
  • Commitment to working with the CEO’s office, shared leadership and in cross-functional teams in a transparent and collaborative manner
  • Experience hiring, training, developing, supervising and appraising staff in a unionized environment
  • A commitment to creating a culture of client service delivery in a continuous improvement and learning environment
  • Possess excellent communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and sensitivity to, working with culturally diverse populations
  • Ability to function within a computerized environment required
  • Ability to travel to Brandon surrounding areas as well as Winnipeg
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and written in French is considered to be an asset

Salary Range: out of scope – salary commensurate with experience and qualifications
