Co-occurring Disorders Educational Curriculum (CODEC)

Welcome to the Co-Occurring Disorders Educational Curriculum (CODEC) web page.

BACKGROUND

In the fall of 2020, an inter-agency Renewal Committee, with partners throughout the Manitoba health care system, was formed to lead the redevelopment of a province-wide training curriculum to support clinical excellence in the delivery of services to individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.

This new CODEC replaces the Co-occurring Disorders Initiative (CODI) training which had become outdated and required redesign to be relevant to today’s learning needs.  The new curriculum has been developed to meet a range of learning needs and will be delivered in two tiers.  The first tier is aimed at strengthening general knowledge of co-occurring disorders and is designed for a broad audience.  The second tier delves deeper into the topic and is aimed at learners with a clinical focus.

NEW: With the CODEC pilot period now completed, Tier One and Tier Two training will be offered via the Learning Management System (LMS). Further details on accessing the training is below.

NEEDS ASSESSMENT

The needs assessment contained 13 questions assessing knowledge regarding co-occurring issues. Knowledge was assessed using a five-point scale (no knowledge, low knowledge, moderate knowledge, high knowledge, and expert knowledge).

For the purposes of this review, knowledge gaps were defined as any area in which respondents indicated low or no knowledge in their response. The exploration of the knowledge gaps were used to inform content development.

Additional content suggested by respondents to the needs assessment included:

  • General Information
  • Indigenous and Cultural (including Traditional Healing and safety, racial trauma and gender/sexuality)
  • Legal
  • Lifespan Development
  • Prevention
  • Assessment
  • Collaboration
  • Drug (illicit) Specific

  • Social Determinants of Health
  • Specific Illnesses
  • Stigma
  • Treatment (general)
  • Treatment – Medications
  • Treatment – Therapy

Co-occurring Disorders Educational Curriculum (CODEC) Lunch and Learn Webinar

On June 22, 2021, a lunch and learn webinar was held  to introduce the CODEC pilot project and provide an overview of the needs assessment survey which was used to inform content for the curriculum.

The webinar also introduced the CODEC training sessions, which will be delivered later this year. The training has been divided into two tiers, each consisting of two, half-day on-line sessions.

PUTTING IT TOGETHER

Guidance for the course content and materials was garnered in part from the knowledge gaps identified in the survey and through review of the written suggestions collected from respondents.

Content for the CODEC was created using current best-practices and evidence-based screening and intervention literature, as well as from input from the Renewal Committee.
